Memory cards are inexpensive ways to store data, however, anything more than 32 Gb is outrageously expensive. External hard drives are the same as internal hard drives, except you add storage capacity without opening up your desktop/laptop. External hard drive attach to your computer by either USB or eSata connections. These drives are found fairly cheap...take a look at Buy.com, eBay.com, TigerDirect.com, or Newegg.com for the best prices. 500 GB external drives can be had for around $60 these days, and are invaluable to increase system storage, especially for laptops...and best of all they are portable and you can use them on any computer.

Memory cards have less memory capacity, and are slower at transmitting data. These are useful for tansferring data only, not as a long term storage facility.

If your looking for long term storage. Purchase an External Hard Drive. These can have storage space of over 1 Terabyte (1000GB) and have a much faster transfer rate.

You can get these in good computer stores and off sites like amazon.

I have found good deals from tigerdirect.ca and newegg.ca

Memory cards...

Pros...

Tiny. Solid state and more efficient. Faster usually.

Cons...

Lower capacity. More costly per Gb.

External Hard Disks....

Pros...

More capacity. Cheaper per Gb.

Cons...

Bulkier. Usually slower. Have moving parts so are susceptible to shock.
