Defragmenting files helps mostly when large files are developed over time, like working on a book, keeping a file of notes for a year, or having a big address file added to for months. These files are increased in size as needed by taking another 4, 8, 16 or 32K of space and adding it to the previous list of spaces used. Usually this is not right after the original space. After a while, the head has to jump from track to track and back and forth on the disk to read the file.

Defragmenting the disk moves these pieces of files around so they are arranged so they can be read more quickly when accessed. It may also move small files to make bigger empty spaces available.

You delete files by highlighting the file name which you can do when opening another file from a program you are using or by opening the file manager and looking at the various folders, looking for files that are old and you don't want any more. If you see files and you are not sure what they are, it is a good idea to leave them there, because they might be necessary for a program to run.

Yes, you should defragment your hard drive atleast once a week. To do this, click on "Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Disk Defragmenter". Then select and defragment each partition one by one. Depending on how many files you have and for how long you haven't defragmented, the process could take anywhere between 15 mins. - 1 hour.

The only stupid question is the one not asked. yes, regular defraging is a good idea. XP does have a tool to delete temporary files and such. It is called disk cleanup - can get to it by Start - accesssories - system tools - disk cleanup.
