Hello I am having some trouble with my computer lately, the way it is running. I recently had my computer looked at by a computer store two times in the past month. The prolbem is that my cursor seems to be dragging and moving really slow, and all the programs that I run on my computer are taking a very very long time to start. Ocassionally, I get a blue screen that comes up that says something about memory..and it restarts my computer. I am very frustrated with this. I had the computer store install a new harddrive because they said my old one was damaged. I have ran several virus and spam cleaners on my computer and nothing came up.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to maybe fix this prolbem..please let me know!
Thank you for your help

I have a labtop and it is a Acer Aspire 5100...if that helps.

I pulled up your laptop and found that it has a 1.6 GHZ processor and 1GB of ram. I have found that Vista operates poorly with this setup. I would first of all suggest installing XP on your machine. (get a copy from a friend or something)

Vista is very "buggy" anyway.

Second I suggest running the "Disk Defragmenter" under tools to clean up your hardrive after removing all the preloaded add-ons that probably came with your computer (all the trial software and games).

Freezing up and rebooting is usually associated with memory crashes....and since you are getting memory messages I think you may have physical memory problems, or driver related.....or not enough (although 1GB is plenty, you might not really have that).

If your computer came with a install disk, I would format the hardrive and install a clean copy of *Windows only*, opting out of all the other software that may be conflicting.

These are basic fixes to try. I would ask a friend who is knowledgeable to help you though before taking it back to an expensive repair shop. They are WAY overpriced.

Good luck!

run your disk cleanup first, then run your defragger. Then you can go to download.com and grab a free download of registry clean xpert. Then run that. It should take a while to finish. When thats done get into run on you start menu and type in msconfig. you will come to you system configuration utility. Check the SELECTIVE START UP. uncheck LOAD STARTUP ITEMS. Restart your machine and see how that works. If it still real sluggish, get into your add and remove prog and get rid of anything you dont use or need. Should make a big diff. If not, Its probably a good idea to uninstall and reload your O.S.

Hi,

Had a similar problem, perhaps you need to buy more RAM memory for the computer. Laptops are often sold with the minimum amount of RAM and then you can buy circuit type board things and replace it with more RAM. The more RAM your computer has the smoother it runs...Ive found PC world can help but are full of obnoxious twats, try a small independent computer repair shop and they can help you find the right sort of memory for a reasonable price.

Ah, I see your problem. If your computer was running fast at first, and it has trouble starting up, and is slow in connecting and whatnot, the problem is...DUST.

Take your computer to the store you bought it and ask for it to be cleaned out. They should be able to do it, but it might cost a few bucks. If you have your owners manual, or know how to take your computer apart, take the "walls" off and wipe it out with a DRY cloth.

It should be as good as new!

If you are getting blue screens with memory issues, my guess is that the memory stick(s) in your mobo are going bad. If that isn't the issue, try typing in msconfig at the run line. Go to the startup tab and uncheck anything you don't need running when you boot the machine. If this doesn't solve your issues, then it might be time to bring it back to that shop and complain.

Try this click start, click run, type msconfig, and when the system configuration opens, click the start-up tab at the top then click disable all at the bottom (don't worry, it wont stop anything from running) and restart the computer.

when it restarts you will get a pop up, just click on don't show me this again and close the pop up.

Next, open my computer and right click on your hard drive, click properties, click tools, click check now and check both the boxes, then reboot your system.

After that is done go-to http://onecare.live.com/site/en-gb/defau... and run the full system scan.

this should noticeably speed up your system.

Also right click on my computer, click properties, click advanced, click setting, click advanced, click change, and check the box that says system managed, click OK and reboot.

I once had a similiar proplem. It may be that you have downloaded to many computer programs, the computer may not be able to handle all of the programs at once. what i reccomend that you go and get rid off programs that are not usefull and you do not use. Another thing might be you have too many open windows up. shut down all open windows that you are not using.

Go to 'My Computer' and double click local disk (Drive C:) and double click on 'Program Files' and 'Program Data' and delete all the folder left behind from uninstalled programs to get some memory back

go to start..the select RUN....Type in msconfig......select the start up tab ..now uncheck all those needless programs that cause your computer to run slow and reboot.

I would allso increase the Ram because that will speed you up.

if the BSOD speaks about your memory tyou should check that, and not virusses or HD.

here's the most widely used memory checking program:
