rite guys,
i am goingt to be getting an external hard drive for my laptop. the memory isnt big enough.

whats the difference between an external hard drive that connects by usb, and a portable hard drive that connects by usb?

the portable one is smaller memory and small in size.

but is that the only difference?

They are both portable. Smaller drives use the same type of disks as laptops (2.5 inch) and they do not need external power, these are typically described as portable. Larger drives are available in the 3.5" format and these do need their own power supply.

Both types need to be treated with care as they can suffer from shock damage.. drop one and it may never work again.

Both are the same,,, however there is an external box with IDE connection in one end and USB connection in the other end, and electric transformer source connection,, this convert the internel HD to external and can be connected via USB,, this system is less expensive than the portable USB HD,, but more prone to proplems and may not be recognized by some PC

I thought the difference between the two was that the a portable hard drive was designed to be smaller so you can carry it (not smaller in storage).

a portable hard drive is basically an external hard drive that is easier to transport. Often you see some so small and light, you can carry them in your pocket.

USB flash drives can be considered a portable hard drive.

There is only one way that an external hard drive can connect to your computer and that's via the USB port. You just plug it in and away you go.

Hi,

I don't see any difference between the 2.

All hard drives come in different sizes anyway.
