You could try Freecycle. Yahoo groups has a freecycle section and they are all over the place. I use it a lot and old computers are given away quite often in my area. Just go to the link and put in your town/city followed by freecycle and see if there is one near you.
Well if by chance you're in a suburban area where they put out trash on the curb every week, there's pickup loads of computers, parts, other electronics out for the taking, but NEVER trash the curbside, pick up any stray crap around your picking area, and leave it as clean or cleaner than when you found it.
See ya in the NW Chicago burbs, DesPlaines, Northbrook, Wheeling and the rest.....:)
If ya have to pay, try Goodwill, Salvation Army, thrift stores are good too, some may be on consignment though and be a little higher priced, but still you can find some good deals

I am not sure about getting a computer for free, but I think a good idea would be to check with high schools, colleges etc, and lots of businesses that have no use for their old computers.............Good Luck.....

If you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and you can demonstrate need, you can pick up a free on here:
http://www.accrc.org/
They supply computers for schools, non-profits, and individuals.

i'd ask laptop techs. i understand a woman who is going around and works in basic terms on Apple computers that instructed me one time she has an entire storage shed packed with previous computers that no physique desires or needs.

I'd look around the Free section of your local CraigsList.org.
