well you kinda need to decide if the CAD stuff or gaming is more important. there are different video cards that will work differently to suit these programs better. nVidia FX cards are the best for graphics design but are lacking for gaming. the Geforce are the other way, the best for gaming but lacking for render times. personally, i do some simple Maya and Bryce stuff and get it done in a decent amount of time running 2 6800GS's in SLi.

PCI-E cards will perform the best so id recommend going in that direction.

Overall, since u want to do some gaming, i think your best bet is running 2 Geforce 6800GS or better cards in SLi. If you dont have an SLi mobo, you can get some pretty cheap ones that will most likely still support the momory and processor you have now. If you dont want to go SLi, go with a 7800GT/GS/GTX. all will work well.

But really, for graphical apps, SLi gives you HUGE benefits, more so than in gaming, because the cards can each render different parts of the scene, or one can render and one can antialias or wtvr. maybe check out the 7800GTX2 which basically sticks 2 cards together.
