Temporary file is a file that might be created by a program when it cannot allocate enough memory for its tasks or the program is working on data bigger than architecture's address space. Modern operating systems employ virtual memory, however programs that use large amounts of data(ex. movie editing) may need to create temporary files.

Some programs create temporary files and then leave them behind - they do not delete them. This can happen because the program crashed or the developer of the program simply forgot to add the code needed to delete the temporary files after the program is done with them. The temporary files left behind by the programs accumulate over time and can take up a lot of disk space. A recent series of system utilities, called temporary file cleaners or disk cleaners, have appeared to address this issue.

Usual filename extensions for temporary files are .TMP

Hope this helps

Some viruses disguise themselves as .tmp files, but mostly they are simply temporary files created by applications and not cleaned up. Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, - ESPECIALLY Outlook) are like teenagers - they don't pick up after themselves. They leave temp files all over the place and don't delete them.

Just delete it. They're temporary files anyway. If you got a virus from it, you'll find out later anyway.
