sorry if this is a bad question (I don't know much about computer science)

Is it possible to take out the RAM from an old laptop and place it into another laptop that is the same brand, make, model etc.

Is there a software installation required? Will data get lost? Is data stored on RAM that will get lost/transferred?

First of all, when your computer is off, there is not data on the RAM. Rest easy :-)

Second, is it is the same laptop no problem taking RAM from one and putting it in the other.

If it wasn't the same make and model, then you would have to make sure that they have the same connection so that the pins match-up. If they did, you could transfer the RAM sticks (DIMMs) from one to the other.

No software installation required.

No data lost.

And if you need to know how, here it is.

When the computer is off, the RAM holds no data. RAM only holds data when it is on. Generally, no software installation is required to transfer RAM.

If you're adding memory, you need to make sure it's the same type, though if you're taking it out from the same exact model of laptop, it should be compatible.

Data isn't permanently stored on RAM, and there's no software installation--just plug it in and you're finished.

Lucy - there are sometimes themes with blending and matching ram. i'd propose a uniform set, sort and all. And it fairly relies upon on your motherboard in case you are able to upload ram. in the event that they have unfastened DIMMS socket, and the computing gadget case facilitates it, then sure.

i think you mean your hard drive,if you put it into a different model/make computer the chances are it will not work because of the data on the drive for boot up will be different
