How to give 5v power supply to a microcontroller using USB port of pc..?

I want to give 5v dc power to microcontroller AT89c51RD2 through USB of pc... microcontroller is placed in a breadboard.. if there is any problem in the circuit wil it affect the USB of pc..? pls help..Thanks in advance...

I would worry about the current capacity of going USB.



I would get one of those "Y" cables they split off power from the main power supply and use that for the breadboard. You'd have the current capacity of the main power supply to use w/o risk of hurting the computer.

Open the case and use the red wire on a molex connector for 5V if the breadboard circuit poses too much risk to the USB



But if the device does not cause the total amps on USB to exceed 500mA then it should be safe

No, it should be perfectly fine. Typical USB port is capable of sourcing from 100 to 500mA, just make sure of your power needs to the microcontroller first.
