Question:
Where can I buy a Japanese layout keyboard?

I'm putting together a new computer and I figure that since i'm in the process of learning Japanese, it would make sense to have a keyboard that could aid in this. I was wondering two things really: first off, would it also be able to work in the default english mode (if i set it to through the OS); and second, can i find Japanese layout versions of boards like the Microsoft sidewinder and Tt esports Meka g?

I'd prefer a brand like the two I specified, but if anyone could turn me to an etailer that sells these things I'd be thankful.

Any help is appreciated.

Nope you can not buy them by themselves. You'd have to buy a complete computer system for that. When you buy a new system you have the option of selecting 1 of 4 different language layouts for the keyboard (including Japanese.

You don't necessarily need a japanese keyboard. I myself have a scandinavian keyboard (since I live there) and can write japanese with it without a problem. All the letters are on the same buttons (and you can always map them again if your keyboard doesn't use qwerty). You can also have a shortcut to switch between the keyboards (I use ctrl+0). Some of the symbols (?, ~, @ etc.) are on different buttons, but if you use the keyboard even a bit you'll soon be able to memorize the most important ones.

I'm not saying that you can't buy a japanese layout keyboard, but in my honest opinion it is a waste of money and effort to get one.

A free option is change your settings. go to: control panel -> regional and language settings -> languages -> details and change it to a US keyboard. The only downside to this is that, if you are not a 'touch-typer', you have to 'remember' some of the US keys, or use cheat sheet, such as the Accessories - on screen keyboard, as some of the keys are different then what is actually printed on the actual key (such as []'@_-=+).. I'm a touch-typer and with all the PCs I've used in Japan this is what always use and it works quite well. You could also go to Akihabara and look for one of those transparent keyboard overlays
