My computer has been running fine for like... 3.5 years now and all of a sudden out of nowhere when starting up the windows boot sound crackles and the pc self runs VERY slowly (even the mouse pointerl ags). I tried booting it up a moment ago, got the crackling noise, ran like crap, and came here to ask this question but when i went to check on it, it shut itself down? it is a laptop and i know computers degrade over time, but it ran perfect up until a few hours ago after i shut it down, and now booting it up is an issue. any ideas??

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.pcboostcleaner.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!

There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

Your hard drive is failing...back up any files you need ASAP onto cds or external hard drives as it will only get worse and will eventually not boot at all. Seriously, if you have important files on there you need to get them off now.

Their are a few things that can cause a computer to run slow: dust, poor ventilation, insufficient hardware, damaged hardware, registry errors, disk fragmentation, malware, too many start-up programs, too many running tasks, firewalls, anti-malware shields, insufficient disk space, and junk files.

All the following are FREE (Downloads can be found at Download.com)

Warning:

--Anti-Virus Shields, Anti-Spyware Shields and Firewalls can and usually slow down your system, but are important to have.

--When you clean your registry you can damage your system.

--Deleting/Moving/Editing certain files can damage your system.

A cool program I like to run before performing system slowing tasks - SmartClose

This program closes out of most unnecessary running tasks and programs, you can add tasks you want to keep running to a list. Programs can be restored upon request or at the next computer boot.

Uninstall unused programs, update your computer regularly, update obsolete or old programs.

Run Disk Cleanup - Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Cleanup

Run Disk Defragmenter - Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Deframenter

Remove Programs from Startup - Start> Run> msconfig

--Click on the Startup tab and uncheck the boxes of programs unnecessary to run at startup

Install and Run ONE Antivirus Program (Can cause system to slow down if the shield is active)

--AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition http://www.grisoft.com/

*--Avast Anti-Virus Home Edition http://www.avast.com/

--Avira Anti-Virus http://www.free-av.com/

Install and Run Anti-Spyware (Can cause system to slow down if the shield is active)

*--Spybot Search and Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/

*--Spyware Terminator http://www.spywareterminator.com/

--AdAware http://www.lavasoft.com/

*--Spyware Blaster

Install and Run System Optimization tool

*--Ccleaner (Strongly Recommended) http://www.ccleaner.com/

*--Advanced WindowsCare http://www.iobit.com/

--Glary Utilities http://www.glaryutilities.com/

*--Auslogics Registry Defrag http://www.auslogics.com/

To Maintain Your Systems Safety a Firewall is Recommended (Can cause system to slow down if the shield is active)

*--Comodo

--Zonealarm

Internet Browser

*--Firefox

--Opera

--Avant

* = Favorites

If all this fails then you need new hardware/upgrades or you need to format/reinstall your hard drive/operating system.
