You have to buy a new one. They are cheap and you can probably find a good one on newegg with free shipping. Pay attention to if you are getting a SATA or an EIDE drive and if your motherboard will support it.

in theory they both use lasers and should be able to dot he same thing. In reality cd-rw drives don't have the proper firmware to know how to burn a dvd. Although the hard ware of a dvd-burner is not really different from a cd-rw the firmware is. Unfortunately no cd-rw company has put out firmware to make them into dvd-rw. I also have not found any 3rd parties making this firmware since it is so complex. So realiy you should be bale to just update them, but in reality you can't. If you know how to install an internal drive you can find a dvd burner for as cheep as 20 bucks at newegg. If you want an external there generally around 50-100 bucks.

you cant, as they use different lasers to burn the data (infrared vs red) You need to buy a new drive, but this are preety cheap these days. You can buy it separately and connect if yourself, but before buying it, make sure it uses the right connection. It could be either sata (small red cable), or ide (large, ribbon cable).

Yup, you will need to purchase a new drive as they are 2 different artichants.
You can get them for cheap on ebay or newegg for around $15. Hope this helps.

No, it's not just software. It's like changing gasoline in a car to aviation fuel and wanting it to fly.
