It stands for Universal Serial Bus, and the correct way to write it is USB, without the dots.
In a simple word, USB is a cable that can transmit data from a device (specifically electronic equipment) to another device. It is, like the name says, a universal cable data. With a USB, you could transfer data between Desk Computers (Desktop or server-type or even supercomputer), Notebook computer (aka Laptop), PDA (aka Palmtop), cell phone (aka mobile phone, hand phone), Media Players (like iPod, etc), Flashdisk (or USB Disk), Digital Cameras, Printers and Scanners, Projectors, among many other electronic devices.
The use of USB is various, depending on the device. For example, (among many other unlimited uses)
- USB may be used to connect a computer to another computer which would then be used to transfer files between the computers.
- iPod loads it songs (and movies) from computer by USB connection.
- Newer Printer and Scanners uses USB connection rather than other older, now obsolete paralel port that used to be used on most printer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parallel_port ).
- cameras can move pictures it takes to computer with USB data.
- A camera that follows PictBridge standard could print to a printer directly without a computer
It is currently the most used standard for electronic cable data.
