Assuming you're using windows, type "msconfig" into run and click on the "startup" tab. Go through the list and take the checks out of anything you don't need (if you're unsure of what an item on the list is, do up an internet search on its name).

If you're in linux, run bootchart (http://www.bootchart.org/) and look at what processes are taking the longest to load. If you feel you don't need them, get rid of them/disable them. Otherwise, see if there's any tweaking you can do.

If that doesn't work, you can try reformatting your system and starting from scratch.

As mentioned above, you could add more RAM, but that's really not all that great of a solution. Adding RAM would be a worst-case scenario... meaning that not even the reformat fixed your problem. Even then, it probably won't speed up your boot speed much.

Unlike the answer below, a faster harddrive could work... but it would require a reformat, which would mean that even using your current hard drive, after reformatting, it would boot up just as fast on your old hard drive as it would the day you bought the computer.

If you follow LCpl's answer, you could potentially turn off your existing antivirus and firewall applications. Make sure you know what it is you're turning off before you take the check out of the box.

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C

First open CCleaner

Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.

To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:

Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.

Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.

afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.

The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.

If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)

The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).

Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.

Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

some of your programs, such as messenger programs, etc., are set to start up automatically with your computer. you can change this in the preferences of those programs... this will help. also, there is an option when your computer first starts up where you can hold one of the F keys and it will skip all of that stuff and boot windows only.

click start then goto run. in the box type msconfig click on the start up tab and unselect everything. This will stop stupid programs that start automatically when you boot windows

1. Download and install bootvis, which is a Microsoft utility for boot optimization http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/BootVis.shtml

2. Get more RAM

3. Get a faster hard drive

More ram. Ram does not store information, so when you "boot up", it has to load all your info into the ram. And so the more ram you have, the faster your computer works.

You can click start---click run---type msconfig---click startup tabs, then you can uncheck programes that dont need to run at startup. Then click ok to exist.

Good luck!
