I've had a PC for the last 4 years, and I recently bought a mac. I bought a WD My Passport Essential SE external hard drive. I was hoping I could use it to transfer my files from the old computer to the new, and then use it to back up the files on my mac, but it can't be compatible with both (without there being a 4 GB file limit). What's the best way to handle my files? Should I take on the laborious task of transferring them using flash drives, and then use it with Time Machine? Or is there a way I can use it to transfer my files too? Thanks!

You can change the type of storage on your hard drive to NTFS. The NTFS type will allow you to read the files on the mac as well as the windows computer AND remove the 4GB file limit. You can use the command prompt to do so. I would recommend thoroughly reading this link:

Good luck.

Any Mac would be waiting to study any computer rfile, to an quantity. while copying from computer to Mac, the Mac OS will cope with the underlying record device. the same is actual in opposite, you may reproduction a Mac record to a computer, regardless of if computer's place self assurance in the record extension (e.g. *.rfile, *.pdf, *.mp3, etc) to be certain the record variety, collectively as Mac won't inevitably prefer the extension. To pass your data all you prefer is a house community. in case you have a router already, basically plug the two into the router (or connect wirelessly) and the two Mac and computer might desire to be waiting to "see" one yet another, yet think approximately subject concerns connecting by way of permissions, regardless of if the Mac geared up-in "help" is tremendously good, basically seek for "hook up with a computer" in the geared up-in help seek. Or use Google, there are various blog posts on a thank you to try this. in case you have a conveyable USB force, that could desire to certainly be much less confusing as you do not might desire to deal with permissions. basically make beneficial the USB force is formatted as FAT32 as Mac's do in comparison to NTFS (by skill of default, maximum USB drives come as FAT32). good success!

Connect both machines to your router, you'll be able to transfer your files across the network. If you don't have a router then you can use a crossover ethernet cable. Many newer ethernet adaptors are capable of reversing their connections - if the adaptor in either of these computers is capable of this then a normal ethernet cable will work too - give it a try.

Go to staples or your local home electronic supply store, you can get a portable or a wire desk drive. They usually hold up to 360+gb and run from like, $45 - $110 I think the biggest is 2 tb that's like... Huge

There are several ways, for example:

1: find a way to run xp/windows 7/linux on your mac.

2: use a combination of winrar and macrar to create and unpack multivolume rar-archives.
