I have just downloaded the operating system Ubuntu onto a CD. How do I now install it to my computer? Do I just stick it in the cd drive and boot it up?

Yes, boot from the cd.

It will not install it but will boot to Ubuntu so you can try it out (Live cd). If you choose to install it there is an icon on the desktop to let you do so.

You will love this one if you are new to Ubuntu. There is now a program out that is free which installs Ubuntu without having to mess about. The best thing is that you can boot into that or any other operating system you have installed. It gets even better. The folder that you install to actually shows up under Windows, and deleting the folder is how you uninstall. If you want to dual boot, you will have to install Ubuntu after any other operating systems, so that the G.R.U.B. bootloader will actually load. W.U.B.U. is by far the easiest method, and if you are just experimenting with Linux, try this method. The W.U.B.U. package is open source and free, just as Linux should be.

Yeah just boot it up and go through the installation wizard.

Dont forget to make some free space in the hard drive so that the ubuntu could be installed and ran along with the current os.

After you have downloaded the full installer, you should be given options on whether you want to install it to the hard drive as an full installation, or restart the computer and boot from CD, or (the option I recommend) installing it as a normal Windows program. This is the easiest as if you encounter problems with it, you can just uninstall it like a normal program.

I suggest reading up on it. The install is probably the easiest part of the whole process, so chances are you will scre w your computer up if you go into it just plain ignorant.

I suggest instead of installing it, boot it from the CD and use the LiveCD feature. That way you can make sure its something you are really interested in doing before you take the giant leap and re-partition your system as well as securely configure it.

Okay you have it on a CD right? So first insert the disk into the CD drive and turn off your computer. When it's completely shut down turn it on again and in should load into a black screen instead of loading onto Windows. Follow the instructions on the screen, using arrow keys and the enter button to select.
