Question:
Mouse wheel scrolling problem?

I have a laser mouse (laser mouse meaning that it has a laser on the bottom instead of a ball) made by Dell, and nowadays, there's scrolling problems, which I've been having for a few months now. When I scroll the mouse upward 1 notch, it mostly scrolls up 1 notch and then immediately scrolls back down a notch, but sometimes scrolls up only 1 notch (like a mouse is supposed to). Often when I scroll down 1 notch, it usually scrolls down 2 notches, and sometimes scrolls down only 1 notch (like a mouse is supposed to). And when I roll the wheel up several notches at once, it barely scrolls up the page a little and then immediately scrolls down kinda far, and whenever I roll the wheel down several notches at once, it scrolls down the page really really far. So this means that the mouse wheel works more downward instead of balanced (since it scrolls up and then back down a webpage or document when I roll it up, and scrolls down too far a webpage or document when I roll it down). So I'm wondering if there's a way I can fix the problem. Is it safe to unscrew both bolts on the mouse to open it up to look inside (on a laser mouse made by Dell) without ruining the mouse? If so, can the mouse wheel be cleaned? Does this method work? Cuz I'm incapable of buying new computer parts since I'm stuck in a group home that's full of staff that are always too busy to take me to stores. So I would like some advice on how to manually fix the mouse wheel problem (instead of answers like "get a better mouse", since I'm mostly incapable of going to stores). Thanks.

Well the easiest solution is to get a new mouse, but since you don't want to, try these tips.

Make sure the that the mouse is properly connected to the computer. Instead of scrolling, click the scoller and move your mouse up and down to scroll, then click the left mouse button to exit scrolling mode. Use the up and down arrow keys. Use the side scroller located on the right of the screen. If it's a wireless mouse, the battery may be running low, and you should replace it.

Hope this helps :)

Good luck!

I had exact same problem with a wireless Microsoft Mouse 3500. I pried the top off the mouse using my fingernails. Once the top is off you will notice the horizontal shaft of the mouse wheel turns a small rotary switch. You can first try using some canned air to blow the dust out of the switch. If that doesn't fix the problem, use aerosol electrical contact cleaner, very sparingly, into the switch. Scroll the wheel to clean the contacts and then blow the excess out with some canned air. You can get the cleaner at Radio Shack. It's the stuff used for cleaning noisy volume controls or the old mechanical TV tuners. Fixed my problem.

Ok. After reading this, it sounds more like there is something clogged in the mouse wheel sensor. The click wheel uses holes in the sprocket for the wheel to detect rotation, if these holes are partially clogged, it could cause issues like this. Try disassembling the mouse and cleaning the wheel.

Have you tried uninstalling your mouse? I tried that and it worked for me.

Control panel -> Mouse -> Hardware -> Driver (tab) -> click uninstall

Check to see if your mouse moves. You wont be able to move your mouse. Unplug your usb and plug it back in.

Maybe that'll work?
