Does the frequency of connecting an external hard disk to the PC over a period of time affect its performance and durability? Would an external hard disk be more liable to damage owing to heavy usage, even though each time being disconnected through the proper way? How harmful to the external hard disk itself is each failure of the safe removal of it from the PC?

Most times, an external hard disk is just an internal hard disk connected to a USB port and hidden in a plastic case.

That being said, most of the "damage" done to an internal hard disk is not to the disk itself, but to the stability of the operating system files on the disk. Since it is rare to be running your operating system from an external drive, it would probably be less of an issue than for an internal.

Your bigger problem will probably be the USB connection (either on the external drive or on your PC) and its ability to withstand being plugged and unplugged a number of times. In my experience, the soldering work on those isn't the best.

External hard disk is not as reliable as internal hard disk it is mainly because of wear and tear. We may not pay proper attention towards disk every time and there is a huge probability that it may slip out of your hands and fall down.

Here are some tips that you can use to extend the durability of the hard disk.

1. Always make sure that Hard disk is placed in a flat surface and is free from vibration while it is in use.

2. Handle the hard disk carefully and cover it with soft material whenever you take it with you. In order to avoid accidental shocks.

3. While connecting to the PC make sure that power and data cables are connected properly and there is no loose connection because loose connection may cause data errors in the Hard disk.

If you follow the above tips then your Hard disk will live much longer than expected.

I would add to Tromos answer and say that handle the harddisk with care. Most of the external hard disks would come with rotating disks which when moved in operation can fail.

If you are planning to buy an external hard disk I would recommend the below one.

It's a 1.5 TB Drive with 2 750 GB HDD's which I have configured to be used as RAID 1. So even if I loose one of the 2 hard disks by data would be safe.

I have a firewire card in my desktop and the drive is super fast and would definitely recommend this drive to any one who want a good backup solution.

hi, even have an exterior hard tension, you are able to reproduction all your archives in the time of to it - maximum externals are plug 'n play so it won't be hard to determine that area out. It exhibits up purely like yet another hard tension once you plug it in and you flow archives to and from it purely such as you may to the different folder on your computing gadget. As for backing up courses, and so on. you are able to back up the archives from the courses, yet no longer the courses themselves. ie in case you copied your complete hard tension in the time of and your computing gadget crashed, any courses you copied in the time of would not artwork, you're able to desire to re-setting up them. (as far as i be conscious of, and my husbands a application engineer) eg you are able to say, backup the Bookmarks or Favourites report to your internet browser (like internet explorer or firefox) yet you are able to no longer back up this gadget, you're able to desire to reinstall it. Having reported all that, I copied in the time of onto my exterior hard tension each and all of the zipped setting up archives of the courses on my computing gadget so if my computing gadget does crash I even have each and all of the courses i p.c. (and the staggering variations and product keys) all waiting to reinstall. no longer something worse than re-setting up a sparkling version of a software that may not open the archives from the previous version!!! (have faith me, my computing gadget crashed as i became burning off an entire DVD of a marriage I had achieved, could no longer get an identical software one hundred+ hours of artwork down the drain, hard to start back from scratch with a sparkling software - ARGH! :) ) All it is from very own journey, so if everybody is conscious distinctive, let us know! Cheers, desire that helped, Kristy :)
