My USB stick (an Integral 8GB) is broke (like the metal bit that goes in the pc itself - I think - the connector) IS TOTALLY SEPARATED FROM THE USB - as far as I am concerned the rest is FINE. BUT, how do I get it back on?? I know you have to solder it or something but I don't really know what to solder (my mum can solder but we need to know what exactly to solder) DOES SUPERGLUE WORK? PLEASE HELP BECAUSE ALL MY GCSE WORK IS BASED ON THIS.... and how do I prevent this from happening again??

I have done it before where i have had to remove the chip from the plastic casing, got a USB extension lead and hold the connector on the place where it is supposed to be, it worked long enough to get all data off a colleagues daughters usb stick that also had GCSE work on it

You can also look at the link and solder an old USB wire to the pins

maybe try the references section at the bottom of this page.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_flash_drive

how to prevent from happening again? get into the habit of having more than one backup.

get another usb stick and have it standing by in case you get the old one working

I think superglue would prevent power from going through.

I looked at a pdf file for one of those references

http://www.usb.org/developers/docs/ecn1.pdf

It goes into some detail. Let it completely load up. Save it on your computer that look through every page. And it is not going to have a section on repairing a broken usb stick. Look for how they are made instead.

What would happen if you lost computer stuff without having backups and it impacted students grades? Sorry if that sounds harse. Just imagine how intense the situation would be if this happened on the job.

There should be 4 solder points on the green USB board and 4 metal/gold solder point to the USB plug. Each of those solder points need to be soldered back down to the green board. All information on a USB stick are processed through those four solder points. As long as each point gets soldered back on your good to go. If you can't do it yourself I would just take it to the wiring Department at Home Depot or the Firedog guys at Best Buy I would hop they atleast know how to solder a electrinics board. It's really not hard at all.

There is no real way to prevent this from happening unless you purchase a USB Hard Drive or use a SD card and stick it in your wallet as a backup like I do. I also create a weekly backup of my regular USB Thumb Drive on my computer each week just in case.

Honestly, I can't understand how someone could know how to solder and it not be obvious to them that you would line the two pieces up and solder the pins and pads that line up.

And, for the future, NEVER store data you care about in only one place. And if for some reason you are going to do that, make it a reliable storage device. External USB flash devices are the second least reliable storage device in common use today. They get lost, bumped into while connected, run through the washing machine, left in a hot car, and so on.

You can install a generic driver for the usb stick, windows should have em. do this without the usb stick inserted. then once you get it installed it should work. It may try to start the installer again which is located in a secret partition on the drive.for what ever reason this partition is damaged or corrupt. this partition however can be removed. then the drive should work normally.

my usb broke last night and I have got my assignment in the usb. I tried to transfer my work to another stick while it was still active, but the computer I was using declined the use of another usb. Is there any work I can take my usb to download all my work or to be repaired?

A software recovery tool you can use is Wondershare data recovery http://bit.ly/1qaI0hG.

It's a good free solution.

No superglue won't work.

If the data is really important you can recover it for £149 http://www.advanceddatarecovery.co.uk/USBSticks.html
