Question:
Is My Hard Drive Failing?
2010-06-24 05:34:22 UTC
I have recently restarted the computer and every time I do and try to boot to XP it says "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" on a blue screen. I ran a dell system check and it failed all of the diskchecks except for the spindown test. I used an Ubuntu Live CD and as soon as I got to the desktop it showed a popup saying BACKUP YOUR DATA HARD DRIVE FAILURE IS IMMINENT. The S.M.A.R.T. data also said "read" tests failed and spinup test also failed. I have been trying to copy things through Ubuntu from the OS to an external hard drive and some of the files are not copying. I am also having trouble navigating the corrupted HD. Do you think it's corrupted?

When you start throwing SMART errors, it's toast.

Time to buy a new one.

No. Computers have a habit of saying things like that for a laugh. Especially on April 1st. Just ignore it. After all, it's only valuable data and a new HD might set you back £60 or so.

Yes, your hard drive is definantly on its way out. I have had the same experience with 2 laptops, they both did the exact same thing. Backup your stuff onto a cd, and take the laptop to a computer repair store, or if it is in warrenty ring the maufacturer and ask for a repair.

Yes. It says it in big bold letters. You Hard Drive is GOING to fail. Back up what you can while you can, and replace the hard drive. Its toast man, just back it up and give it up.

No worries though, a new hard drive will work perfectly :D
