How can I get my computer to recognize my sound card?

I recently had to restore and format my computer due to a virus. I had to re-installed Windows XP and started with bare-bones programs. Since the hard drive was wiped clean, all the factory-installed programs and driver were lost and now the computer cannot recognize my sound card.

I have tried downloading drivers from Realtek but they only offer codecs. HP only has driver updates (not the original driver itself). Nor does Windows recognize it through "Add New Hardware."

I really don't want to buy a new sound card, but I would like to like to be able to hear audio again! Please help!

If you have the cd's when the company shiped them to you. Use those because those will at least put the driver on there. And after you put the driver on there. Then you can update the drivers after that. That should work after you do that, if you still have those cd's. I have a dell cpu. And i could go to dells website and type the service tag in. I would check if Hp would have anything like that.

Open box, remove Sound card, reboot without it.

Shut down then Plug back in, reboot this will activate REgistry, and will attempt to install updates. Otherwise you may need new sound card.

good luck
