Question:
My computer does not have enough memory??
2007-09-09 16:31:01 UTC
i don't have many large files, just simple word files and about three hundred mp3 songs. I delete all the programs and files i don't need (on my desktop too) and i have defragmented as well. But still my computer tells me theres not enough memory and occasionally, it says 'you are low on virtual memory'. What is virtual memory? How do I fix this?

P.S. I am not a computer person so please speak english=]

Virtual memory is an addressing scheme implemented in hardware and software that allows a computer to use space on a hard drive as if it were actual memory. How many programs do you have running at start up?

Go to start menu>run. Type "msconfig" (without quotes). Click on the startup tab. Un-check any programs that do not need to run when you start your computer. Leave check marks next to any anit-virus or firewall programs.

When you are done click OK. Restart computer. When computer has re-started a dialog box will inform you that you made changes to your computer. Click "do not show again". Click OK.

If you are not sure what a program is go to Google (www.google.com) and it will tell you what it is any whether it's safe to remove the checkmark.

"You are low on virtual memory" basically means that too many programs are running and using up the memory.

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL which will bring up the Task Manager. Then click the Processes tab. This shows all the processes that are running on your computer. Now click the Mem Usage (may have to click twice, until the highest is at the top), which will put the processes in order of how much memory they are using. Now you can see what is using up the memory. You can end some of these processes, but make sure you know what they are before you do so.

So why are there so many processes running? That's down to what starts up when you first log on to your computer. There's a list of processes that run. To get to this list, click the Start button, then go to Run. Type in the box "msconfig" (without quotes) and click OK. A box will appear. Click the Startup tab. Now you need to untick any programs you don't want to startup when you logon and click OK.

Next you can go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. This will display a list of programs installed on your computer. Remove any programs that you no longer need, but make sure you know what they are first. This will clean up your computer and hopefully make it faster.

You are obviously not a computer person, no need to mention that ;)

The files on your computer are kept on your hard drive. This is called storage, not memory.

Memory is RAM. You need to put more RAM in your computer, and/or have less programs running at one time.

You might get a lot of good answers here, but the best recommendation I can give is to have a friend who is knowledgeable about computers look at your situation and try to determine what is the best course of action.

If you want a good answer here, give more details. We would need to know 1) how much RAM you currently have, 2) what version Windows or other OS you are running, 3) what programs that you run, both in the background and "on the desktop." You may have some malware which is eating up your computer's performance.

Well virtual memory is space used on your harddrive used in addition to RAM (memory). I'll assume you're using Windows.

Open My Computer and right click on your Local Disk (C:) and select properties. You should now see a big chart of used and free space. Anything less than 1gigabyte and XP really starts complaining. Assuming your drive space is ok you could check your virtual memory settings. Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance - Settings, Advanced, Virtual Memory Change. Try it on System Managed Size, or 2Gb Min 4Gb Max.

Tip for saving space, set your recycle bin size to 1%.

Last thing you can try (before upgrading) would be to reduce the number of things you load on startup and the number of things you're running at the same time. Reduces load on RAM and therefore use of virual memory.

It means RAM, not hard disk space. Find out what RAM your computer uses and order some additional memory or replacements. Virtual memory is what the name implies - supplemental storage space on the hard drive that acts as memory when it cannot use the main memory.

To increase your "virtual memory", you need to go to CONTROL PANEL.

Click on SYSTEM.

Then click on the ADVANCED tab.

Where it says "Performance" click on SETTINGS.

Then click on the ADVANCED tab there. And down where it says "virtual memory", click CHANGE.

Virtual memory is when your computer uses extra hard drive space as swap, it allows you to have "memory" without actually adding memory to your computer physically.

To add more virtual memory,

Go to start run msconfig and turn every thing off except your anti virus see if that helps.

buy a new graphics card and insert new ram.

newegg.com has both of those but you need to know if its compatible. just get a PCI graphics card, and check what kind of ram your pc uses and buy some more
