Problem with computer?

Question

I have a problem with my computer. When i switch it on its working but no signal is coming to the monitor. I've tried another monitor another RS232 cable (video cable), i've tried another graphic card, i've double-checked all the connections inside the computer but still in vain. Otherwise everything else seems to be just fine. The HDD is working, the CD and DVD ROMs are working the mouse and the keyboard are working as well. What i'm thinking is that either the motherboard or the CPU have some kind of problem. My motherboard is ASUS P4500-MX / 963SIS. Can somebody give me any clue. I will really appriciate any help given.

Ok, it sounds like you have tried almost everything that you could of to get your display to work. You haven't said whether your machine is booting into windows; do you get the widows chime? Have you tried an old type pci GFX card to rule out the port. You said when you switch it on that it works. Are you talking about the display or the computer itself? Are there any unusual smells inside your computer? Give me some more detail, and I'll give you some more info.

From the supplimentary imformation that you have supplied, it sound to me like your motherboard is shot. It's time to get a new one. One more thing, before you fit your new motherboard, I suggest you use a multimeter to check the voltages from your power supply. PSU fault are notorious for causing this type of system failure. At this stage, you can only hope that you haven't damaged your CPU too.

Clearing the CMOS won't help if your motherboard needs replacing.

Does the motherboard have onboard video as well. The video signal could be going out the onbard instead of the graphics card if this is the case. If you have tried a new card with no results if there is no onboard then suggest it would most likely be a motherboard issue and not CPU as this is usually the case. Normally with CPU or memory issues you will get beep codes or no activity from the pc at all. Hope this helps

If you have onboard graphics and you add a graphics card you need to disable your onboard graphics in your Bios settings at boot up or you will not get a picture on your monitor.If you have another slot for your monitor on the back of your pc try plugging into that you'll probably find you have a picture then.

Might be your monitor, also check the pins on the connectors, blow out any dust and make sure the connectors are well well pushed in. Motherboards dont usually fault like that, unless the socket is damaged. Try the monitor on another pc first. Then if all else fails ebay the old stuff and start a fresh.

Sound like the motherboard is not sending the signal to switch the monitor from standby this can be due to a faulty switching transistor on the board (repairable at reasonable cost) But as you state it could also be the cpu. Any chance you could swap it to eliminate this.

So far you checked many things we would check. Also check the BIOS settings to make sure the AGP slot is enabled. The next step would be to remove and reinsert the RAM. If you have some other RAM sticks i would swap them. If that doesn't work look, smell, and listen for damaged componets on the motherboard. If none of this works move to the CPU. Turn off computer remove and reinsert swap if possible.

I assume all the stuff you tried came from a working system.

RS232 is the standard for a serial interface not a video cable.



You could try a PCI graphics card incase it is the PCI-E or AGP slot which is faulty.

There is a possibility that you have the on-board video controller enabled. You ought to be able to plug into the video out on the motherboard, then go into setup when it boots and switch it to the video adapter you have installed. If that isn't it, I don't know.

clearing the cmos probably wont help, try reseating memory and proc, also some agp slots can be temprimental, try reseating these too, try several times. Else it sounds like a motherboard problem and good luck in sourcing spare.
