Question:
Windows Explorer Problem, Please help!?

Hello,

I have recently been experiencing a problem on my one year old ASUS laptop (running Windows Vista Home Premium) that has worked like a charm until now. Recently it has started asking me to confirm that I know the program "Windows Explorer" and to allow it to run when I start up. If I don't press allow I get a black screen.

Once I accept Windows Explorer, the windows explorer error pops up letting me know that it has stopped working, and then it restarts. It also does this when I plug in or unplug headphones, for whatever reason. I heard of a fix from a friend that involved the control panel, but when I open the control panel, there are only 4 icons that aren't helpful. When I try to view in classic control panel, there are no icons. Where did these go? Is it due to the same problem?

I hope this is fixable without wiping the hard drive because I have no means of backup.

Thank you for your time, please help fix my problem!

Find someone to loan you a Vista Disc, then before the laptop boots, hit F11 or F8 or F12 or whichever one will take you to the laptop's BIOS then fool around until you get to a screen called "Boot priority" or "Boot sequence" and select the number one drive as the cd drive. Then restart. Then follow the prompt to REPAIR Vista. That should do it.

This sounds like a Virus has over written the Explorer.EXE.

You should run the latest Virus Checks on it (such as Nortons).

You may need to reinstall Windows.

This is the most frustrating problem ever...

It happens.. and there is no clear solution.

try:

1) windows update (don't need to wipe)

2) format

3) get windows 7 (upgrade, don't need to wipe)
