Why would my computer keyboard stop working?

My keyboard suddenly stopped working (I'm at a different computer now) and I can't figure out why. I checked to make sure the cable didn't come loose and that it was plugged in securely. I looked in Control Panel and my keyboard properties and it seem there's no device listed. I borrowed someone else's keyboard and it does the same thing, so it's not the keyboard. I think it's the port that the keyboard plugs into that's gone bad. How can I fix this? Also, should I buy a keyboard with a usb port instead of the purple plug.

The purple thing is a PS2 connector. In my job I provide support for our computer users. I have encountered this problem before. It is much easier and faster to buy a keyboard with a USB connection rather than troubleshooting the problem with the PS2 port.

For about $6 to $9 you can get a splitter that plugs into the USB and then you could connect the mouse and keyboard into it. Check on Ebay or any computer store. Also do not unplug any mouse or keyboard while the computer is running.

yep you answered your own question, it appears that the 'purple' thing (i dont know what to call it either) has malfunctioned and the best course of action would be to buy a keyboard with a usb attachment, unless your willing to put a lot of work into finding out what caused the original problem

I had some of my keys stop working. If you like pound on the keys sometimes then it would make the keys to stop working.

Just get a ps2 to usb adaptor, you can get them in computer shops
