Question:
Jumper settings for USB hard drive?

I have a USB hard drive enclosure. I don't have the manual or instructions for it. Does anyone know what the jumper settings should be? I am assuming it is the same for all brands of enclosure. Should it be slave or master. I have a hard drive in it now but it isn't working. I haven't looked at it for a long time and I noticed I don't have the jumper clip which is the setting for master/single. I think it is supposed to slave. I don't know who manufactured it. It has the CompUSA brand on it and I don't see a tech support page for them.

well I never used an IDE harddrive in an enclosure before. But slave is usually for when there is another hard drive in an IDE ribbon. But since there is only one hard drive on the usb enclosure, I would assume setting it to master (or single if available).

Mind you that now a days most hard drives are sata, which has no need for master/slave settings and rarely needs any jumper settings.

Since a USB drive cannot serve as a primary partition drive, it would be the controller select option, or if not available - slave.

I highly suggest doing the initial setup for the drive as a full-blooded secondary in the case btw. The power limitations for a drive through USB are very bad for reliability in those situations, and the jumper for the drive will be properly set when you put it back into the external case.

Good Luck!.

It shouldn't matter, but I'd set it for master. The more important issues are whether the controller can recognize the drive size and whether or not the drive drive is one of the Western Digital drives that required a jumper for single drive configuration. I'd identify the drive first and check the drive maker's site for information.

do you see 6 pins next to the power slot and the IDE cord slot? there should be a jumper connecting 2 of them. just move it from whatever setting it is right now to cover the 2 master pins.
