I need to upgrade on my Dell Inspirion 700m, it is over 5 years old now. It runs good and has been a great laptop. NO PROBLEMS. But over the last 5 years it has lost alot of its speed opening programs and running software on it. The current configuration I have on my laptop right now is
Processor 1.60GHz,
589MHz, 496 MB of RAM,
80 GB Hard Drive

I have deleted much of my music, photos and videos I do not need anymore. Also, defraged and ccCleaned my laptop. But I still its not done much.

Would it be best to upgrade in another 1 GB of RAM or getting more CPU (which should I get if I should upgrade more CPU?). Or should I do both. 1GB of Ram is only 50 bucks, I dont know how much CPU would cost. Please, any help would be amazing. THANK YOU

I severely doubt you can upgrade your RAM in a laptop much less your friggin CPU.... Get a desktop.

Well, laptops are very hard to upgrade. It would be very hard to upgrade the cpu, as most newer cpus will not be compatible with the motherboard in that laptop. If you want to upgrade, the ram will probably be the only thing you will be able to upgrade without tearing your computer apart. Also, because your laptop is so old, you will need the slower type of ram, ddr not ddr2 so that it will be compatible. Also, 1gb of ddr ram should not be $50, maybe for ddr3 ram but not the lower ram, it should be more like $10, check out newegg.com. Hope this helps.

However, I would strongly recommend that you buy a new computer, as the performance increase would be well worth it, and you can get good laptops for under $600 nowadays.

Get a new laptop. All of your current specs are not even half the standards of today's laptops.

It's more worth it to buy a new laptop than to upgrade each components of your old laptop. Upgrading the CPU depends on your laptop's motherboard. You will have to read through documentations to find out what type of CPU it supports. I don't think it might even support the more recent CPUs since its an old motherboard thus really no point in upgrading it. As I'm typing this, I'm not even sure if you can upgrade a laptop's CPU. Also check your documentations to see what type of RAM your motherboard supports and the maximum amount.

Looking at the specs, you need DDR 2700 RAM. The laptop has 2 places you can install the memory in. The max amount of ram you can put on your laptop is 2gb. Since memory is so cheap nowadays, I would buy 2 gb (2X1 Dimm pc2700 200 pin ddr sodimm). Install 1 gb into the lower socket and 1 gb into the upper socket. If you only want to upgrade 1 gb, then install the RAM into the empty memory socket. so you have 1.5gb, which is fine. refer back to your manual to take the cover off the memory module.

if you aren't doing much multitasking i would go with the ram as its fairly low, how ever the processor will help with opening files quicker.
