You can do the following ..

1. De frag the drive

2. Un-install applications you don't require via add/remove programs.

3. Turn off unnecessary background services using the OS Administrative tools in control panel

4. Increase your virtual RAM via the system icon in control panel

5. Backup your registry, download a registry cleaner and run it.

Check snapfiles.com under their freeware section.

6. Add another stick of RAM.

7. Enable DMA on your hard drive if it's not enabled.

8. Disable all start up applications.

Go to start, run type in msconfig

hit enter on keyboard and then click the "start-up" tab

Un -check them all and apply it.

Reboot and when the system starts up again check mark the pop up and close out the prompt.

9. Download spyware doctor available free from google-pack

http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer.html

Un-check the applications you don't want from the pack.

Make sure you update the definition files after you install spyware doctor then run the scan.

You can delete your cookies and temporary internet files, and you can delete old files that you no longer use. You an run Ad Aware or Spy Bot to get rid of spyware that slows your PC down.

But if you really want to increase your CPU speed, add some RAM. 512MB is nowhere near enough...I run 4Gb on my computer.

A 2 gig stick will cost about $40.
