Question:
How to go about upgrading my PC for better fps in games?
2012-01-19 10:04:34 UTC
I want to be able to play Star Wars: the Old Republic with fairly decent fps. Right now I'm getting between 10-20 fps on low settings. I don't mind playing the game on low settings, I just want it to run smoothly...

Windows Vista
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz 2.34GHz
Memory (RAM): 4.00 GB
System type: 32-bit Operating System

Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT

I think I've listed everything, let me know otherwise. =P

Buy a Mac.

First of all, don't get a mac. Although if you did, it would run your game at a good frame rate, but you would have spent way too much money so it makes no sense unless you're into style as some people think it provides. Based on your specs, the first upgrade I suggest is your video card. The 9600GT is good for older games, but it is dated by today's standards. Go to your local computer store (not Best Buy or other lame chains, except Fry's) and describe to them what you want to do and give them your specs. Just make sure you get a card with at least 1 GB of ram (I'd personally go with a minimum of 2 GB). Good luck!

P.S. Vista is NOT slow and you do NOT need to upgrade your CPUs. A good video card can handle most of a computer's graphics needs. A CPU upgrade will not result in any noticeable gains in fps. I promise you this. A good gauge on which card to get is a price range of $150-200.

You should probably upgrade me to Windows 7 and buy a new PSU and graphics card.

Try buying a "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti" and a "Diablotek DA Series PSDA500 500W ATX Power Supply" These together are a very powerful combo for any gamer. But if you already have a powerdful enough PSU Say 450w and up thne you shouldnt need the new PSU as the GTX 550 Ti can run on a minimum of 400w.

To find out the wattage of your PSU just open up the case and look at some of the stickers on the side of the already installed PSU. Its pretty easy to see:)

Hope I helped

I would upgrade the video card first and add more ram. I think the NVIDIA 250gts is sufficient enough for that game. Also an extra gb or two of ram would be great. If you want, upgrading to windows 7 and a 64bit os is better, but you have to reinstall everything.

Hope this helps. :)

No1: Upgrade to Windows 7 (Vista is slow. Download it of piratebay, fck paying £200 for it)

No2: Upgrade Processor

Your graphics card is fine, your ram is fine
