hi why can't I install win98?

Question

when I press enter to start setup I keep on getting this message
windows requires largest executable size to be at 442368bytes to run
any ideas.

If you have access to another computer and internet access see if you can find a file called MAX.LLF it is a programfrom maxtor write this to a floppy and put it in the floppy drive .

then boot from floppy, choose to boot without cd rom support and low level format the c drive, this will give you a clean(raw) hard drive take out the flopy disk and then boot from your windows 98 boot disk when you are face with the dos prompt type (cd drive letter)setup.exe and this should boot the windows 98 disk.

Your hard drive is too large!



W98 is not reading the leftmost digit of your hard drive's size, so it would read 103Gb free space as only 3Gb (for instance)



The crucial thing about the link below:

"The amount of space on the hard disk has been reported incorrectly" - the rest of it is useless



Copy files from the setup disk onto your hard drive, so that the free space is reduced by 4Gb. This will make the digits that W98 reads be higher than the 4Gb it's looking for.

Put them in a directory called Deleteme - and remember to delete them when you have finished the installation.



Crazy but true! I know because it happened to me...



Even if you can't believe it, you lose nothing by trying it.

How are you trying to install Win98? From within an earlier version of windows? If so, what I would do is make a win98 boot disk (can't remember the steps of the top of my head, but it should be pretty easy to figure out). Boot to the floppy, and then install windows.
