hmm what OS are you using? You generally do not need drivers for usb connected devices in windows operating systems because usb devices have what is called a USB profile which contains its own driver. If your drive is failing to install in such a manner, there may be a problem with the usb controller, usb port, usb enclosure, or you may simply need to update the drivers for your usb controller.

I will say that most people in your situation, actually have the drive installed properly, but have merely failed to partition / format it. If you are running a windows OS, with the drive connected, hit start->run and type diskmgmt.msc if you see your drive in that list you can use the menus within the disk manager to partition and then format the drive. Also make sure it has a drive letter assigned.

One other thing if you are running windows xp, make sure you have updated to service pack 3 because in some of the earlier revisions usb devices did not work as reliably and sometimes can't access the usb profile.

You should not need drivers unless you are using an old Motherboard or out of date Operating system that does not support large drives.

Drivers are files normally provided by software and hardware vendors. Hard drives are connected to hard drive controllers which are devices usually located on a motherboard, but which can also take the form of an add-in controller card. Controller drivers are normally provided by the operating system (ie, Windows or MacOS) or from the motherboard or add-in card manufacturer. Most of the time, you will want to contact the manufacturer of your motherboard for more information regarding drivers.

The hard drive is usually supported by drivers that are built into the operating system.

Be advised, drivers are not the same thing as firmware. If you are checking for a firmware update on your SATA drive, see Article ID 207931: Firmware Updates for Seagate Products.
