Hi there,

Office 97 Pro works fine on my PC running Windows XP Home Edition SP-3. It also worked fine with SP-2 and the original XP.

However from time to time word (Office) would become corrupted or have an incompatible issues after an update. To fix this all I do is uninstall Office, reboot the computer and perform a new installation.

My suggestion is to uninstall MS Office using "add/remove programs" then shutdown the computer.

Next restart the computer (this resets the registry to remove any reg keys that remain after the uninstall).

Finally install Office just like you did the first time and most likely everything will work again.

Reinstalling Office does not delete any of your documents it only removes the program and registry keys.

I have the Office 97 disk with the product key so reinstalling is fairly easy but if you have Word or Office preinstalled you will need the product key and be able to download the exact version of Office you originally had.

Note: if you have no luck reinstalling or getting Word to work then I suggest downloading and installing Libre Office ( link below). Libre Office is a free open source office suite that is about 97% compatible with MS Office. Libre Office is a "spin off" of Open Office and is the new version of Open Office.

Hope this helps,

Al

"daughter is having a problem", and "word stopped working". Doesn't help much. Can you give specifics?

My MS Office 2007 running on my XP Pro is working perfectly. I would never recommend upgrading to 7 just because an installed program is flaky. Tell us more.

One thing you might try. Do a file search for the file normal.dot When you find it, delete it. Start Word.

Hey there,

I found a free download of LibreOffice here http://j.mp/1p6RMVu

A great alternative to Microsoft Office, LibreOffice is a must-try for managing your various office projects.

Microsoft is socially inept. You can always download http://download.openoffice.fm/free/ for free. Depending on what your daughter needs to do: it's basically like microsoft office 97, except no-one is trying to grab your wallet.

Use openoffice.org, works with all of your ms office programs, and it is free.
