dvd rom suddenly won't play some types of disc?

Question

I have an in the box DVD R/RW drive.

It will play audio CDs fine.

It will play Grandmaster Chess CD Rom game fine.

It has suddenly stopped playing DVDs and Football Manger 2007 CD Rom.

FM2007: when I click the link the light flashes, it spools a few times, makes a couple of small clicking sounds and then says 'Insert correct CD'.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers, I have done system restore, the disc drawer does eject through My Computer... I am really stuck.

It an't be broken as it still plays some discs, surely then it can't be a laser problem either. I have searched the net for advice for hours and tried everything.

Any help - not just telling me to do what I've already done - appreciated.

Well, I'm not sure but I think the CD reader and DVD reader have separate lasers for reading the disks, If one fails, it will still read the other type. Also with DVD R/RW drives, they have regions, similar to the DVD regions for DVD disks, and you are only allowed 5 changes, on the 5th change, the drive is locked to that region, so any disks of another region can't be read. You could try using a separate CD and DVD lens cleaner, see if that helps, if not its either a lens problem or a region problem, you could try to download some region free software and see if that works........

You haven't mentioned cleaning the DVDs that don't work. Have you tried? Lay DVD on a flat surface and rub with a damp clothe using index finger, dry with toilet paper. Check for scratches on the surface of the DVDs.



Mine you I have a CD data disk that the DVD drive reads sometimes and sometimes the DVD drive won't read it, I have no idea why.
