Question:
What type of RAM does the Intel 945 chipset use?
2008-12-28 14:25:34 UTC
I need to know what type of RAM the Intel 945 chipset uses. I have one GB right now and i am trying to get up to 4 GB.

Thanks for the help.

WOW! Thanks for all the info, but you could have just stated what the computer name and model number was, or the name and model number of the motherboard. (CPU-Z from CPUID.com, my man!)

Look at your list. Go down to where it says =>Northbridge.

See where it has Intel i945G/GZ rev. A2?

Now look at the Southbridge.

Intel 82801 (Also known as ICH7)

Now look at this list,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_chipsets#9xx_Chipsets_and_x3x.2Fx4x_Chipsets

This page, is a page on Wikipedia.org It is the List of Intel Chipsets.

This is a long page. It should come up though, to the list of

Intel 9xx chipsets. The heading should be Pentium 4/DX/XE/ Chipsets

with DX and XE in blue. If not, scroll down the page until you come to this heading.

Look at the left hand column, and look down until you see,

945GZ under the Chipset header. Look across and you'll see

ICH7. The ICH7 is an Intel chip. It is the Southbridge chip on your motherboard. The Southbridge chip controls the ram memory.

According to the chart, you can use DDR2 Sdram at 400MHz or 533MHz. Above in your listing It states the Memory Frequency at

266.0MegaHertz (MHZ) DDR2 ram is stated at half of it's frequency rate, because it's DDR ->2. Your ram is actually DDR2 at 533MHz.

Or PC2-4200.

Chart indicates 2GB's is the Maximum TOTAL Amount for the motherboard.

These are examples of PC2-4200 (DDR2 at 533MHz)

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=1647&name=PC4200-DDR2-RAM&Nav=|c:1554|&Sort=0&Recs=10

I really suggest you go to Crucial.com, or Tigerdirect.com, or Newegg.com, and use their Memory Configurator Tool. (Crucial is Crucial System Scanner Tool. You just click on the 'Scan My System' button on the home page) This way you'll be sure, in case my info is erroneous!

Edit: Yep! You'd better use the Memory Configurator Tool!

I've already put erroneous info. The NORTHBRIDGE chip controls ram memory!

The only thing i could make out of this was chipset information.

This comes to no use when wantig to know the BUS speed of the ram.

It is however DDR2, but you need to know what speeds it can attain.

My guess is 800 however, but specify the motherboard model and I can and will help you further.

Your motherboard has a PCI-E slot, so it's going to help ANY PCI-E card, era. Video memory is beside the point--that's no longer something that determines compatibility with a board. basically make sure your ability grant is adequate adequate to assist whichever card you're pondering.

It takes DDR2-533, PC 4300. It says in the memory specs you just added.

To be honest, I don't believe that's correct
