Is this a recognised brand name such as Crucial or Kingston or whatever, or is it some generic USB drive that was cheap from eBay or somewhere else?
If it's generic, then it's probably died a death and you will be unable to use it.
I'm sorry to have to repeat to you what I tell the pupils and teachers in my school, the USB drive is a transport device, not a storage archive. You should be making backups at home and if possible at school on a school computer account. If it's regular school work and projects at KS3, then two copies are enough. For GCSE and AS/A2 then you need at least 3 copies.
If you can, download the trial version of PhotoRescue and use that. It can recover most things.
For pictures, you need to purchase the program but if it is only documents or other data files, then it should be able to restore anything from the USb drive.

Actually, as long as your usb drive is not physically damaged you may well be able to retrieve the contents, even after a format.
Use the quick format option as opposed to the full.
After doing so and if it now works (DO NOT WRITE ANY DATA TO IT, JUST MAKE SURE COMPUTER CAN ACCESS IT).. There are a great many data recovery programs out there. Go to download.com and search for a free data recovery prog. Alternatively, if your work is important, buy a good one.
Anyway, just to assure you, data is never physically erased from a disk. It remains in place even after being deleted. Once new files have been copied over the top though, it becomes all but impossible to recover.

Well.... I Can't Retrieve Your SchoolWork, But I Can Fix It.
Put Your Flash Drive Into Your Computer.
Find Out The Drive Letter, example (J:/) or (F:/).
When You Have That, Go To:
Start > My Computer
Right Click On Your Flash Drive (Find The Letter)
Click "Format"
Do the highest capacity, FAT32, Default Allocation Size,
Leave the rest blank.
It will lose all your data, but your drive should be working again.
Hope I Helped,
Matt

if the usb drive cannot be accessed, u will have to format it. then u can use a software to try to retrieve the information on it (try File Scavenger or get data back) - they worked for me. it doesnt guarantee 100% retrieval but still u can try.

Oooohhh....bad luck mate, it seems like the data is corrupted. It's never a good idea to have your only copy of work on the USB, as if ti gets corrupted, it's gone. You'll need to format it to be able to use it again.

Tweasers and a small screwdriver could additionally help, based on the form you get carry of it caught... yet confirm to maintain your self grounded... if it fairly is a private computer, not as great of a controversy, yet whilst it fairly is a working laptop or computer they are nomally gentle to the sweetness... so in simple terms be carefull and not placed on wool whilst your doing this...
