Question:
C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE?
2009-07-12 03:02:37 UTC
I'm having problems with my comp. When I try to open a programme (for example, Control Panel) a box comes up saying C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE Application not found

The same happens if I try to open a folder from the start menu.

I can't run a virus scan either, as every time I try to open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, the 'Open With' box comes up and I can't open it (this also happens to numerous applications, which is why I'm typing the question on another computer as I can't use the internet on the other).

Does anyone know how to fix this problem or could refer me to a site that might know how to?
Thanks :D

I have read a couple of tech support blogs. Are you running the Google Tool bar? Try removing it and see if this cures your problem. You could have conflicting programs.

If nothing works, Try booting into safe mode. Safe mode will run with only the minimim amount of programs. If you still get the error, you are toast. Time to reload. If you can get stuff to work in Safe mode, do the system restore.

You could also try system restore. Restoring your PC back to a time when it did work is worth a try.

Otherwise, you'll probably have to reinstall.

First. If you have a Windows disc, copy explorer.exe to C:\Windows and re-boot (turn off, then on).

If that doesn't fix it, log on as an 'Administrator, back up the registry (or create a restore point) and do the following...

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc

Then file new task, type regedit

Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image Execution Options\

In this list there will be a entry explorer.exe right click on it and export it. Then on the right hand side delete the "debugger" key(the "debugger" key is just a file on the right side of the window named "debugger"). Restart.

Then run your anti virus/mal/spyware programs.

Explorer.exe is a core process application of windows and is probably corrupted or deleted. Is your Start menu even on screen? Consider running registry repairs, or virus scans through command prompt. Explorer.exe runs the start menu and application processes run by the User. Consider re-installing windows if the registry cannot be repaired/found.

Hi there,

The first thing to do to speed up pc and get rid of malwares and viruses is cleaning the registry with a program like CCLeaner http://bitly.com/UrAPru

It's the best choice.

then you should found an Explorer.exe because it's important for running windows's application also folders most of them depend of Explorer.exe

you can try find it in Windows folder by Start->Run->explorer.exe

then hit return key(enter) if it appears (it don't have an interface your task bar and other folders run on it )then you have it unless you have to reinstall windows I am afraid I can't give it to (explorer.exe file) you cause windows's policy.!

If you have trouble opening them..its simple.

1. Press "Alt+Ctrl+Del" and Select "Processes"

2. If you find "explorer" in the list, end the task. Don't freak if your start bar dissapear.

3. Select "Applications" and click "New Task" & "Browse"

4. Browse to the file and double-click on it.

Hope this helps..you can also run your AntiMalware by browsing. If it don't work:

1. Perform Step 1 - 2.

there could be something messed up with ur registry entries indeed.. your explorer.exe file is corrupted.. if you cant run any programs to clean ur registry then the only option available is to re-install windows..
