The only thing that shows up is the background picture, and I can't right click anywhere. I have to press ctrl + alt + delete to get places. It won't let me go to the control panel, and if i open a new task and type in 'explorer', everything will come back for about 3 seconds and then disappear again. Also, I can not do anything with the windows key on the keyboard. I had some sort of spyware called 'mirar' but I got rid of it, and I rearranged the room a few days ago and plugged the computer into a different outlet, maybe they have something to do with this? I have tried starting the computer in safe mode but that didnt work either. Can I fix this or do I have to get a new CPU?

Changing plug or phone sockets will make no difference whatsoever. Next time you bring up the Task Manager and new task, type desktop. This will bring back all your desktop settings. From there try using System Restore to a date when your PC was working properly. Use some decent spyware, Ad-Aware and Spybot both free from download.com. Also a good AV PC-cillin 2007 or Norton, the free ones are very limited. Then scan regularly with all 3 & delete all you find, at least once a week.

Sounds like svchost.exe, explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe isn't running...., to test them you need to press control+alt+delete and under file it says "new task (run)", write each one of the three files mentioned above and see if that does the trick. If this work you need to backup everything if you still can and reinstall windows, if this doesn't work you are better off formating your computer and reinstalling the operative system. If you don't do anything else than internet and documents on your computer you should migrate to a version of Linux (you'll be virus free) or have 2 different Operative systems on your computer.... have windows for programs you need to run on windows and linux for everything else

you dont need to buy a new computer, but you do need to have an adult help you do a full recovery and reformat of your computer. There was a short fix to recover your toolbar, but I couldnt tell ya without seeing it. I would suggest you put in your recovery cd rom and let the whole thing recover, when it comes up , let it fully load ALWAYS, and then. youll have a fresh fully cleaned system with everything you need. Dont let it get that bad next time.

Sorry, your best bet is going to be to reload windows XP. . . Before you do, you may be able to goto safemode (F8 during bootup, and select the SafeMode option)- From Safemode you should be able to save any files, or information that you may need to keep onto another for of media. . . CR-R, DVD-R, external drive, etc. Just make sure you use an up-to-date AntiVirus when putting the information back on your new insallation of XP !
