I just built this new computer and I'm trying to get it online so I can activate XP. It has a Firewire port and an ethernet port, but it doesn't seem to know that it has a LAN cable plugged in. I have the drivers CD for the motherboard but it's a bit wonky.
Sorry if my terminology is off.
My motherboard is an MSI 975x Platinum

First of all... did the ethernet card come with software? Or is it part of the motherboard itself? Second of all, do you see the ethernet port in the Device Manager? To check that, click on Start > Right click on My Computer > Left click on Properties > Click on the tab "Hardware" > Click on device manager > Then look at Network Adaptors and make sure it is showing your Fast Ethernet. If it is, double click on it, and it will open the properties. Check to make sure the driver is installed properly. (If there is a yellow question mark on the device, the driver installed, but with a problem and you cannot use that device).
Your options are to uninstall, rollback driver, update driver, etc. You can try to update the driver, or, your can uninstall it and use your CD to reinstall it. Also, are you sure your modem is working correctly? You may need to call your ISP provider and find out if they can communicate with your modem.
Aside form this, I am not sure what to do.

you need to get the drivers for the ethernet port. Should have come on a CD with the motherboard.

Did you notice is there is a yellow icon for some hardware in Divice Manager? If card is on the board and driver is correct it will see it but if card driver is not correct (even you think it is) you will see a yellow icon for one of the hardware in divice manager. If you don't see any of that then your card or the board got some issue, maybe compatibility or hardware error.

go to my system / hardware / device manager and check your ethernet to verify you have your drivers. if you dont have it, download the proper drivers to another computer and burn it to a cd, then load the drivers via cd onto your pc.
if you do have the proper drivers, check the cable and modem you are connected to.

I think first u should have to install its netwok components from the mother board cd
Then Check your NIC card whether its working or not.
Try ping tests with loop back address..

do what they said and if that doesn't work its possible the NIC is defective and you can always slap a $15 adapter card NIC in
