Hi,

S. Bhattacharjee from Kolkata, India here. When I connect the Internet after that all programs (including IE6.0) in my PC stops working for 7/8 minutes. In that time if I double click on any icon on my desktop then for 8/9 seconds the mouse pointer shows busy but the program does not open or run. After 7/8 minutes the all programs I clicked, starts open one by one and then there r no problem. If I don’t connect the Internet then my PC is very OK and no problem. I already try to solve the problem by uninstall and reinstall the modem in 3 times.

The hardware configurations:
1.Intel original P4 Motherboard.
2.Intel P4 2.4 Ghz CPU.
3.256 MB ram.
4.OS: Windows XP with SP2
5.256 Mhz Broad Band Internet Connection using Modem (There r no hardware problem in the modem).
6.IE 6.0

Can any body help me to solve the problem?
Plz give me the proper and accurate advice.

Thank U.

If you just turned on your PC, it could be program(s) still loading up. You can check this by going to the Start button and looking in All Programs>Startup. Or you can use a third party program to check this. You may also need to clear out the cache in IE. It may be overloaded and needs cleaned out. Next time in IE, go to Tools in the toolbar, click on Internet Options near the bottom and click on the button that says Delete Files. Also, depending on the modem type, it may be taking resources (RAM) to initiate the modem. You are running amount of memory needed to run XP. You could try adding more RAM.

I had a similar problem, it was caused by a program conflict.

(I had suspected a virus).

In my case, Google Desktop (which seems to communicate with its mothership the minute an internet connection is detected) did not like Outlook 2003. Even if I was not running Outlook it was coming on in the background because of MS ActiveSync synchronising my Pocket PC and everything would hang for agonisingly long minutes before coming on at once.

I solved it by upgrading to the latest Service Packs and patches for Office 2003, and the latest version of Google Desktop which I also stopped auto-running on boot-up.

BTW, 256Mb Ram is not enough to get decent performance out of Windows XP!

Good Luck.

An internet connection can become slow or stop working due to a number of reasons depending on the type of the connection. Many of the problems can be solved by making software changes or small hardware corrections. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yl62gz

It's probably not the modem, it's probably that bloated insecure waste-of-space of an OS you're using doing something you don't know about (WGA? Trojan? Spam-bot?). Get decent anti-spyware, anti-virus, anti-malware, anti-trojan, anti-gatesware software and thoroughly disinfect your PC.

Alternatively, wipe your disk and install Linux.
