I've just upgraded my memory (as recomended by Crucial) for 256kb to 3gb in 3 slots, 1gb stick in each.
I'm running XP pro.

Problem:-
3gb installed - base unit whirs away but no display.
2gb installed - systen boots into windows, then after 1 minute approx reboots of it's own accord, repeat.
1gb installed - OK

I've tried swapping the stick into different slots, no change.
Any ideas !!!

problem 1 - your motherboard does not support 3 gb of memory as well as windows xp has issues with more than 2 gb of ram

problem 2. the memory frequency is not supported by the motherboard

Make sure the memory is the right type, check your mother boad to see which slots combine, eg 1 and 3 2 and 4 etc. Try 2gb first, see if that is okay. Check your bios to see how it is set up for memory by pressing delete at boot. Go online to your specific computer model and see if you can get any more info on your motherboard, you may only be able to use configurations of 2 or 4 gb if it is done in pairs. Also there is a possibility the memory could be burnt out if you have not correctly installed in the first place and used an anti static clip.

it's possible that one memory stick is bad. i did the same thing, i upgraded to 3 gig and it just beeped on booting. you have a defective memory stick. just experiment, pull one at a time to find the bad one.

hope the place you bought it from has a warranty. then you can replace it for free.

good luck!

I had a similar problem and had to take out and then re-install the CMOS battery - a bit like a large watch battery on the motherboard.

In mine it just un-clipped.

This seemed to reset everything and all was well.

Check the frequencies of the memory modules.. May be of different frequency...
