My WinXP box is randomly rebooting whenever a web page is transferring. It has been doing this since the fresh install of WinXP and its a completely new box built from scratch. I downloaded the drivers for all the hardware but that didnt help any. Anyone have an idea what the problem might be?

Errr, by the box, you mean a tower, don't you?

Well, let me ask you if you know how much RAM you've installed?

You see, XP needs 512 MB RAM for itself. It'd be usual to have 1 GB RAM, minimum to run XP and Office XP, Any other programs would need more RAM to be run.

I've a suspicion that you need more RAM.

Cheers!

A computer rebooting is often the result of a Trojan or virus trying to reboot after adding a command line. Not all malware can be removed by a reformat, some malware can only be removed by the hard drive being connect to another computer, while the computer scans the hard drive for malware. Grisoft has a free root kit remover, Microsoft has a shared toolkit software that protects through redundancy files, Microsoft also has Drop my rights software, this software limits the software whose start icons are inserted into the Drop my rights window to limited rights. Put all browser and IM and email software in the Drop my Rights window, this will help prevent people from using your internet software to change command lines. there is much more, this is a good start if the problem is from trojans

If you clean out your cache then of course it takes ages to load a web page. The whole point of cache is that it decreases the time it takes to load a web page. You are doing the opposite. The Internet works by using client/server technology. Your PC is the client and you connect to a server. You then download objects to the folder Temporary Internet Files (cache) and these are re-assembled to display a web page in your browser. However, if those objects already exist you do not need to download them again, therefore the page loads a lot faster. If you clean out your cache then it takes a lot longer to view a page of a site that your revisit because you have to download all the objects all over again.

add a gig of ram and go get windows vista basic if you don't have a great graphics card. Either that or reinstall XP again that is all I can come up with at this time.

Well it could be other problems

But you can disable the reboots

right click on properties go to advanced...

then start up and recovery.

uncheck the "automaticly restart"

and just uncheck everythong on the "system failure" part honestly

EDIT: By box he means his computer.. lots of people refer to their computers and servers as a box... like "my box has been running for 800 days"

My suggestion would be to go to event viewer

-control panel, administrative services, event viewer, clik on application error log, on red flags click - for info and possibly help in ascertaining the prob. let us know what it says
