Audio driver gone? How?

I turned on my computer this morning and after awhile there is a message saying to install an audio driver. I tried to install it even thought there is no CD. Inevitably it failed. Then I checked the Program files to find out that the driver files are missing. Currently I am downloading a driver for my audio hardware even though I don't know what model it is as we got it installed by a PC repairman previously.

How could files be gone suddenly? I remember my teacher saying that viruses can run havoc on the system and can change files to a different format or worse. Could this be virus related?

The link above is for driver detective which won`t install your drivers unless you pay.

Is there no name and model number on your computer?

You can find this out by downloading belarc advisor which tells you everything in your computer.

Maybe it will give the name of your audio driver.

If not, it should give the name and model number of your computer, then you can go to the support site and download your driver.

After you scan with belarc, copy and paste the results into "added info" and I`ll see if I can help.

Improper shutdown can also corrupt files, including drivers. Some software programs, including viruses can also corrupt them.

Here's an easy way to search download and install the correct driver:

Use this driver scanning tool, which scans your computer for the needed drivers. It has an option to automatically retrieve them for you.

You can download this free tool from here: http://xpdrivers.com/index.cfm or directly from this link: http://xpdrivers.com/download/download.cfm

After you have downloaded the above file, double-click on it and follow the simple steps to install it. Then, when it asks if you want to run it, just answer yes. This is easier than manually searching, downloading and installing the drivers.

Hope that helps.
