Why is my PC going into blue-screen? ACPI.sys on win vista?

Yes I know... its vista and for now I’m stuck with it...

for ages it’s been working fine up until resent where it’s started to blue screen on me, now the only way I can use it is to go to safe mode, then jump out of safe mode... even though I’ve done nothing to make it better.

as for the blue screen, all I can tell you before it flicks back to the BIOS start-up page is that it’s an ACPI.sys driver error (iv also been hunting to find how to stop it from automatically restarting with no luck.)

Other pre symptoms I’ve been coming across like my video driver freezing mid game and sometimes it never recovers without a full restart... which if you’re in the middle of something is well annoying... it’s done this so far with games like EVE online and Civilization IV, what happens is that the game freezes then the screen goes blank, and sometimes if I’m lucky it recovers and I go back to playing the game, others it doesn’t and I need to reset the pc.

I’ll try to dig deeper into the error messages and give them to you guys but for now here’s the specs>

AMD Athlon 64 x2 6400 3.21GHz
8GB RAM (i do graphic work)
MB= Asus M3A32-MPV Deluxe, Wifi-AP
Gcard = ATI Radeon HD 4800 (saphire)

It’s a home build, and I would like to fix both the blue screen and the Gcard freezing... anyone know what is going on? I’m on Vista home 32bit ;)

ACPI.sys is the automatic configuration power interface, basically what it does is allows the computer to throttle back the cpu when it overheats, is your cpu heatsink and case clean of dust? what are your cpu temps while your playing a game? also update your graphics drivers to the latest version of catalyst, they seem to be working great for me.

it could be your pc overheating. or perhaps the acpi.sys has become corrupted/unusable, and needs to be replaced. try booting into safe mode and disabling it, along with cool n quiet in your bios.

ACPI isn't really necessary for basic functionality of the operating system, it's just advanced power management. Try this:

-Go to Device Manager

-Expand the list next to "Computer"

-Right click the ACPI entry

-Click "Update Driver"

-Tell Windows to install from a specific location, and not to search - you'll choose one from a list

-Select "Standard PC" from the list

-Reboot, and disable ACPI in the BIOS

Enjoy no more bsod.. :D

graphic card freezing could be it heating up as well and throttling back, monitor your temps while in game by tabbing out and checking the catlyst control center, if its hot hot hot and i mean over 80-90*c i would suggest cleaning/dusting out the heatsink.

you should do both the cpu sink and gpu sink. dont use a nylon brush either cause static kills things.

try with a can of compressed air, or if you have access to a air compresser, perhaps that, but dont go too hard with it, and be carefull its not blowing water/moisture/oil out of the air compresser as some have a tendancy to do that, and that would also be a bad bad thing.

This may be due to corrupt windows registry. The registry system is a really complicated one in the operating system. There are zillions of registry entries stored in the database which contains information about the softwares, hardwares and other files and programs present in our computer. One unfortunate thing that almost every Windows user encounters at some time is that his computer registry gets corrupted. Most people who become victim of the registry corruption find themselves clueless as they could not figure out why their anti-virus and anti-spyware software are not finding any solution for the common PC errors such as the crashes, freezes and annoying pop-up error messages. Not only this, by using a number of computer protection softwares, people make their computer slower than before. The best way is to run a registry scan and clean registry. It not only remove many type of errors but also speed up computer. For a look at one of the best registry software, run a free scan from Intel Directory http://ibx.intel.com/directory/productpage/tabid/85/language/en-us/p-4869-reginout-pc-optimizer-reg-cleaner.aspx

This will sort out your problem.

Best Wishes
