Hard Drive Won't Spin Up With Ribbon Cable Attached?

My IDE hard drive won't spin up when the ribbon cable is attached. I can hear it ticking, but it won't spin up all the way. However, when I remove the ribbon cable and just leave the molex power attached, it WILL fully start. I've tried using another ribbon cable, but that is no go. What could be wrong here?

Sounds quite odd. Did you change anything recently? If you leave the computer end of the cable unattached, does it still refuse to spin up (computer-independent problem)? It could be a jumper problem, make sure the jumper is set to cable select and use the correct end (master) of the cable. You could also try setting the jumper to master to override the cable select (make sure there aren't any other devices on the cable). Look on the label for the jumper settings. If you are still having problems, it might be a time-to-access problem at boot-up. You could try going into your BIOS and increasing the spin-up time before the computer tries accessing the drive. Not recommended, but you might try turning on the computer (drive spins up), then plugging in the IDE cable and then immediately restarting your computer (so the power doesn't turn off). Maybe it will work on the second boot if it doesn't loose power. I would also try another computer if you can. Hopefully your drive isn't doomed. Best of luck!

some would have an anti vibration latch in the ribbon which clicks it into the motherboard plug? sense around till you hit upon it then squeeze and pull gently, in many cases in the centre, or it particularly is barely plastic friction-ed jointly, attempt small wobbles from area to area till it comes out. i does not be not straight forward under pressure, no factor can't improve? 24 pin skill will actual be latched in, is additionally a 20+4 pin connector, ie 2 plugs?
