Hello. I need a help with a 'unknown' device driver. I get multiple blue screen stop error shutdowns when booting, and the microsoft crash analysis and hp health scan told me that they detected a problem in device driver called 'Serial'. so I went to the device manager and the Serial device driver was a hidden device under the non-plug and play drivers category. so I right-clicked went to the Serial properties, but there's no update driver option. The troubleshoot took me to the windows help page but it doesn't say anything about non-plug and play drivers or hidden devices.
So what is this Serial device driver? The Properties says something about Legacy too. And how can I fix the device driver and get rid of the yellow circle and black exclamation error sign next to the Serial? Should I use the driver recovery cd? (so do i just put the hp driver recovery cd and does it have a repair option or do i reinstall it?) or Should I temporarily disable the Serial device driver? or should I un

First thing is this, if you aren't using that device you surely don't need a driver for it, so uninstall it. Reboot your system, to see if new hardware is found. If it is, it will ask you if you want to use an existing driver or a new one. Choose a new one, and insert your HP recovery CD. Let it load from there. Chance are it will not even see anything new. Serial drivers are generally used for serial printers which are going obsolete anyway. Hope this helps

damn dude that's TOO MUCH INFO. People aren't gonna help u if u give them so much to read i didnt read it all myself, just like the first paragraph lol Well uh here's the solution: you have to reinstall your windows probly. I got the same messages before. Actually I'm about to reinstall my Windows myself. You probly have a corrupted install or somthin went wrong sometime. So yea best thing to do is reinstall your windows, but before you do that make sure you backup everything (save to cd, dvd, another hard drive if you have one, flash drive, somthing), and then reinstall.

Good Luck. Hope that works.
