Here are some things you could try: 1. Most ext HDs use USB cables. If yours does, try changing USB ports aka plug it into another USB plug on your computer. 2. Try leaving it alone for a day or 2, it might be overheating and having problems. 3. Your computer may have problems reading the HD, try unplugging the HD, restarting your computer, and plugging it back in. 4. Your HD might just be broken, you'll need to get it replaced. If you have some USB storage devices or if your computer has enough space, try backing up the hard drive itself, and then try reformatting it, or if the store you bought it at allows you to, trade it back in for a brand new one. 5. Worst case scenario is theres a virus on your computer or HD. Not a high chance of that though. I hope I helped in some way.

Since you may have an infected computer AND an infected hard drive, ANY anti-virus that will be installed to your computer will be screwed up by the virus before you can use it to get rid of the virus. I assume that reformatting the drive is not an option, you could try housecall from trendmicro http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ I usually use this if I feel that my anti-virus has been screwed by a virus.

For free anti-virus, try avg http://free.grisoft.com/
