Question:
XP or VISTA?
2007-08-13 10:19:41 UTC
I have a new computer, but I have a older one upstairs and it still has win 98 on it, works fine just seems to run slow, like real slow even with cable hookup..

Now some say I should waint on getting Vista as they need to get the bugs out first or most of them. They say XP will be smart for now.. computer is old, so maybe vista wont work on it. HP 6564 or close to it 6465 ITS OLD....

I also heard, not sure if its true, the up grade for vista has the complete vista on it is this true? and what do you all think about XP for now for my old computer....

Thanks for any help. 10 points for the best nice post....with information on this.

XP or VISTA ??

humm..

Compatible Hardwares or Non-Compatible Hardwares..

Simple as that :)..

If you have hardwares that are compatible with Vista (have Vista Drivers).. then why not Dual Boot both :) ..

And about your old PC.. well, I think u should try XP on it.. surely put on some more RAM and it should work just AOK.

I have P3 550MHZ running XP and booting is faster then XP on Dell Dimension 8800 which has Dual Core 3.2 GHz. Don't ask me how :D

There are other things on the net called Thin XP or Lite XP. Those are stripped down version of XP. You can manually do that by N-Lite program. But if you want to download readymade ones, you should know where to find them. It's not available on Microsoft website :D.

Edit:

Hi again, I think it's time we should all talk about Linux these day's. As it better then Windows and installs on almost every system. And driver support for your old PC would be great.

I tried Ubuntu last month. And frankly speaking i learn so much more about Linux and my Laptop. I last used Linux way back in 1998 and it wasn't a preety picture. But now i can say it's good... if not better..

You can download Ubuntu from their website... took me about an hour (150 Kbps)... burn it into CD-RW and install was just about 20 mins. It boots, shutdowns and works faster then Windows.

Try it to see it yourself.

Good Luck..

here is what i say... its like this. when you goto toyota and look for a new car... there are two cars on the lot for the exact same sticker price. one is a 2007 one is a new 2008.. but they are asking the same price... both are new and have less then 100 miles.. which is better? 2008 is. why because if you decide a year or two later to sell it.. .yes you will lose money either way.. but it will be worth more as a 08 then a 07. so being they are the same price th 08 is more worth it.

computer wise.. same thing. vista is great. so is xp. by why spend 500 -1500 now on a xp machine that will not be sold at all in a year. your new $1000 machine will be like your 98 machine faster then the vista will. dont get behind right off the bat.

vista is great. i implemented it in my office. the user didnt know the diffrence. its simple. it works. no issues that stop the clock. just dont try using the same printer you been using for the last 15 years with vista. prob not going to work.

my advice .. go vista go as fast as you want to spend. min 1 to 2 gig ram. no celeron or duron or turon. no RON proccesors. get a 64x2 or core 2 dou. intell.

If you want to upgrade a computer that has windows 98 on it, then I'm afraid Vista is out of the question.

For 'normal' operation (read: no lag), it requires 1gb of ram. It would work on 512mb, but the feel will not be the same. A good graphics card is also required for the Aero interface, something a computer having win98 is surely lacking.

I assume your win98 computer has about 256 or 512 ram in it, in which case, Windows 2000 or Widows XP are the only choices available for you.

You must also consider your cpu's speed.

If it's below the 1Ghz mark (ex: 400mhz), Windows 2000 would be the best choices.

If however it's above the 1Ghz mark, for for Windows XP.

Are you asking whether to upgrade your old computer to Vista or XP?

First of all, the Windows 98 runs slow because it is really old. If you want to upgrade the operating system, you must make sure that it meets the system requirements. It should meet the XP requirements, but I doubt it will meet Vista.

XP requirements - http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/winxp/winxpfixes/windows_xp_compatibility.htm

Vista requirements - http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2006/may06/05-18GetReadyPR.mspx

The operating system upgrades come with the complete operating system. It will be as if you bought the computer with xp/vista. Beware though - since it is an old computer, not all xp programs will run on it. It simply does not have the hardware to run large powerful programs such as Halo/WoW etc...

Hope this helps.

The upgrade is just that, an upgrade. You will still have to have the full Monty in order to use it.Your old computer will not work very well with a new OS. You will have to get the old drivers for the hardware from HP. Big hassle. Best to clean out the hard drive and continue with XP.

Chances are that the system you mentioned will not be able to handle Vista. It might be able to run XP, but you want to check the hard drive capacity and RAM. Most likely there will not be the proper driver support in VISTA for a system that old, so I would go for XP.

I have vista and it is very good, don't get vista unless you have new computer, your computer as you said is old keep windows 98 on it, windows 98 needs 64mb of ram to run, windows xp needs 128mb of ram to run

if you want to install xp on it you should add more ram otherwise it will run slow. vista won't work on your computer, about vista many soft wares and drivers are compatible with vista now than three months ago, I have vista and xp on my computer if a software does not run on vista I run it on xp, use your judgment before you spend your money.

I would definitely go with Win XP. The Hp 6465 most likely won't run Vista anyway.

XP, because it's simple to use and request less computer resources than Vista, and with vista you will have some little problem with the movies, programs, and so on

I would get XP, I have used Vista and gone back to XP. Yes the upgrade is the full version, without the bootable files.

Actually, you have answered your own question. Vista does have its problems, sssssoooooo I suggest you do the "XP" and after the issues are worked out with "VISTA" , up grade. It is always better to be safe then sorry, don't you agree?

if your old computer runs 98 slowly, it will run even slower with an xp in it and it will definitely be incompatible with a vista.

XP!!! Dont you dare go with Vista! You will regret it! I been down that road, trust me its scary!
