Why does my hard drive constantly recycle with a high pitched sound followed by an "errr" sound? Drives me bananas. I am running an HP desktop with Vista. 2 internal hard drives. Not sure which one is causing this. I thought it may have to do with power settings and turning itself off, and then turning itself back on.. It happens even if I'm not on the computer and it is sitting idle though.

If you can access that hard drive's partition I would back everything up because it might be a hardware problem...maybe bads on the hard drive's platter ,it might be telling you it's gonna die.

Usually when it turns off and it turns on again it's not the power supply that's causing it to do so...you should try to disconnect other devices from your power supply and let the computer running a little only with that hard drive connected and see if it acts the same,if it does then it's a platter problem-you might have psychical/physical bads on your hard disk's platter.

If they're physical then you should try to recover your information and buy another hard drive ,but if it's psychical then you should google for some bad-repairing program.

You should also try the integrated program Windows has:

My Computer->Right click on the specific partition->Properties->Tools tab->Click Check Now(the first button from a total of three)->In the newly opened window make sure to select both options(Automatically fix file system errors & Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors->Click Start->you might need to restart the system in order for the program to be able to do it's job correctly.

could be the drives motor has a connection fault and keeps dying, or the built in controller card is faulty - either way does not sound good, make sure you have a backup of anything you need on it

could be the face book virus. that was going around a lot. if you used the top friends app or the stalker app, it gives your PC a huge virus. it will constantly restart, the only thing to do is wipe it.
