Sounds like you will need to try a few things. Typically in situations like this you will have to repair your current
installation of windows. This is usually the only option when a computer will not boot up, particularly if it wont boot
into safe mode. This will require an OEM windows disk that matches the version of windows currently installed on your machine.
If all you have is a "recovery disk", it will not work in most cases, and if you boot from that type of disk you risk
losing all of your data. The windows repair install works like this......
1.insert your OEM windows disk into your cd rom
2.you will see the message to "press any key to boot from cd"
3.if this message does not display, you may need to go into the bios and change your cd rom to the first boot device. This
is usually done by pressing the delete key, or f2. This will depend on your individual computer. The setting is usually located in
the advanced options, like boot sequence, boot order...etc.
4.The first choice will be "enter" to continue loading windows or press "r" to enter the recovery console. If you are
familiar with the recovery console, it can be used to manually repair your windows installation.
5.press enter to continue loading windows.
6.the EULA agreement should be next....press f8 to continue
7.setup will now search for previous installations of windows
8.if the repair option is available, you will see the option to press "r" for the automated repair. Setup will take over from here
The computer will restart after it loads files.....do not respond to the prompt to boot from cd.
9.The computer will gather some information from you, and at some point it will prompt you for your windows serial key. Most
major computer manufacturers will display this on the side panel of the machine.
10.After the computer boots into windows for the first time, you will have to install any device drivers that are not included in
the xp driver database. Typically this means you will be installing the devices, unless your machine is older. Most companies will
include a driver disk, but if you dont have one you will need to use another machine to download them from your computer manufacturers
site.
11.After driver installation you will most likely need to activate xp, if this is the first or second time you've done a repair you will
most likely be able to activate over the internet.....other wise you will have to call microsoft to obtain a new installation ID.
12.You will then be able to retrieve updates from microsoft, and that should conclude the repair.
If setup cannot find a previous xp install, or a valid partition, this usually means that the HDD is damaged and you cannot run a repair.
If you suffer from "blue screens" during the repair, the most likely culprit will be ram or the HDD itself.
There are, of course, too many variables to cover in the space allotted here, but i hope this has helped.
