Question:
Pentium D 2.8Ghz vs. Pentium 4 3.4Ghz w/ Hyper-Threading?

I'm looking to buy a used pc locally today, and i came across two deals.

The first one is a Dell desktop running a Pentium D 2.8Ghz processor and the Second one is running a Pentium 4 3.4Ghz w/ Hyper-Threading. (Both running 2GB of Ram)

My question is which one is better?
Please provide details.

Thanks in advance =)

If there is not much dual threading, the P4 3.4GHz has the edge.

If threading comes into it, the the dual thread gain from hyperthreading generally pans out to about 30%, while dual core gains about 80-90%

So 3.4GHz * 1.3 = 4.42

2.8 * 1.8 = 5.04

Under dual threading conditions, the dual core has a slight edge.

Honestly, I'd say it really comes down to the other components - does one have more RAM, a better graphics card - or a card at all as compared to onboard?

Pentium D is a "real" dual core, as if you have two processors. Therefore, it is more suitable for a multi-user environment. Pentium 4 with hyper-threading is a "virtual" dual core. It is suitable for multi-tasking (executing many programs in the same time). It is not slower than a Pentium D when you are doing a single task. If you want to use your computer as a computing and multimedia system, then Pentium D is the best solution. That's why Media Center PCs are equip ed with Pentium D processors

The Pentium D 2.8GHz is definitely a better computer, it has a dual core processor, the Pentium 4HT 3.4GHz is only a single core pretending to be a dual core. Both are old as you say but the Pentium D will drive your graphics card better.

Pentium D is a dual core, so you might be better off with that. However, D sucks a lot of power. Factor that in.

Core 2 Duo is ideal, outperforms them both by a substantial margin, and sucks less power than either of them. Lower clocks? No big deal. A 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo has been proven to beat a 3.6Ghz Pentium D. (note lower is better in the charts as it measures the amount of time required for tasks)

Umm... I think the P4 3.4GHz is better, but it's kind of a toss up. Honestly though, both are pretty obsolete so I wouldn't waste my money on either.
